Turnbull Canyon runs right off the edge of Hacienda Heights and it is one of the best short rides in the county — tight, wooded and popular with riders every weekend. The Puente Hills roads around it are similar. That is a canyon-audio problem rather than a freeway one: short bursts of speed, constant direction changes, tree cover that traps and releases sound unpredictably, and a full-face helmet throughout. Hacienda Boulevard and Colima are the everyday half of the riding — suburban, busy at school hours, and slow enough that the bike is heard by people standing at the kerb rather than only by the rider.

There is a second canyon-specific problem that has nothing to do with durability. Tree cover on Turnbull absorbs and releases sound unevenly, so a distant source appears to surge and drop as you move through shade and open sections. A source close to your ear barely changes, because there is almost no air path for the canopy to act on.
