Fullerton riders have the 57, the 91 and Carbon Canyon within easy reach, which is an unusually good spread — two loud freeways and one genuinely good canyon road. Add the downtown Harbor Boulevard district where bikes get parked and looked at on a weekend evening, and the brief covers three quite different conditions: freeway noise, canyon airflow and standing still among people. Carbon Canyon is the one that sets the requirement — it is tight, shaded and cool, with enough elevation change that air temperature drops noticeably on the way up, and a full helmet with the visor down is the normal way to ride it.

Pods avoid the trade-off because they solve the problem positionally rather than by level — close to the rider, aimed correctly, and therefore adequate at any of the three without being excessive at any other. The other reason level is the wrong lever is that each of these three conditions has a different noise character rather than simply a different amount of it. Freeway noise is broadband, canyon noise is wind against a helmet, and a downtown street at a standstill has almost no noise at all — one volume setting cannot correct for three different problems.
