Fountain Valley is 19.7 miles from the Avalon pin. Warner Avenue or Euclid Street toward the 405 north, then the 710 and Avalon. Thirty-five to forty minutes on a bagger. The alternate is Brookhurst north to the 22 west. The 405 is predictable before nine, which on a bike matters more than it does in a car. Ride in or trailer in. Maps pin 22025 S Avalon Blvd Ste A, CA 90745.
Fountain Valley is minutes from PCH at Huntington, which makes it one of the better-placed cities on this list for weekend riding. The usual pattern is a short run down to the coast and then a long steady stretch north or south, which is sustained-speed riding in salt air. That combination — constant wind and constant salt — is harder on a bagger system than almost anything except a canyon, and it is much harder on the connections than on the speakers. Inland of that the city itself is quiet, wide and residential, so the first and last ten minutes of every ride are at low speed on streets where the bike is clearly audible to anyone in their front yard.
AMS Pods start at $649 a pair. Chrome or gloss, crash-bar bracket and screws included, built to order in-house, about three weeks. Nothing gets invented beyond $649 a pair. A full bagger build is usually up to about ten business days in the shop, confirmed in person once the bike has been seen.
Richard makes them in Carson, in-house since 2003. Hertz Neo goes inside — weatherproof, which on a coastal bike is the point rather than a bonus. Street Glide and Road Glide take a fairing amplifier and a tank pull. On a Road King the pods carry the job and the amplifier lives in a bag on a carpeted board with an AMS quick disconnect. Connections are soldered and sealed because salt finds anything that was merely pushed together. Terminals get sealed as well as soldered, because on a coastal bike the joint and the terminal fail at different rates and doing only one of them just moves the problem rather than solving it.
Street Glide, Road Glide and Road King. Harley radios in the shop are Diamond Audio, plus Sony and Soundstream. On a bike that runs PCH most weekends the connection work is what determines whether the system is still right in three years, and it is decided at install rather than later.
Riders who run the coast usually ask about the speakers and rarely about the connections, and it is the connections that fail. Salt gets into anything that is not sealed, and the symptom is an intermittent fault that comes and goes with temperature rather than an outright failure — which is far more annoying to live with and far harder to diagnose afterwards. Sealing them is a decision made once, at the start. The other thing riders underestimate is how much of the damage happens in the first season rather than gradually over several. Salt starts working immediately on anything unsealed, so the decision made on the day of the build is effectively the decision for the life of the system.
A system that has no intermittent faults after three seasons of PCH. Weatherproof drivers that have not degraded. Sound that stays consistent through a long coastal run at steady speed. Bags that come off in seconds. And a build that did not need revisiting. Sealed terminals as well as soldered joints, so the problem does not simply move. A quiet setting that suits ten minutes of residential street at each end of the ride.
Warner or Euclid to the 405 north, then the 710 and Avalon — 19.7 miles, thirty-five to forty minutes, before nine. AMS Pods from $649 a pair, about three weeks built to order. Weatherproof Hertz Neo and soldered, sealed connections for coastal riding.
Same bay. Car audio is LA Car Beats at lacarbeats.com — built for longevity on a car you keep a decade. Window tint is LA Car Tint at lacartint.com — 3M Authorized Dealer, central Orange County heat. Vehicle security is LA Car Alarm at lacaralarm.com — GPS on the truck and trailer that tow the boat.
Monday through Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Sunday closed. Pods are about three weeks built to order, so the first visit is a measurement and a conversation. Street Glide, Road Glide and Road King. Those three only on these pages.
Weatherproof is the point rather than a bonus on a bike that runs PCH, and the small neodymium magnet keeps the pod compact.
Yes, both take a fairing amplifier and a tank pull so the wiring runs properly.
Before nine if you can. The 405 is predictable then, which on a bike matters more than it does in a car.
Yes. A Payment Plan is available at the counter after the bike is quoted. Payment Plan is the only name for it.
No. The joint and the terminal corrode at different rates, so doing only one of them moves the problem rather than solving it.
Immediately, on anything unsealed. Most of it happens in the first season rather than gradually, so the build-day decision is effectively permanent.
Car audio, window tint, and vehicle security — plus Harley bagger audio on the AMS Pods side. Body work, wraps, paint protection film, and auto glass are other trades; we'll point you to someone good rather than guess.
