East LA has a long and visible two-wheel tradition alongside the Whittier Boulevard car culture, and the riding is street rather than canyon — Whittier, Atlantic, Olympic and the 710. That means a lot of time at moderate speed among traffic, where a bike gets heard by people on the sidewalk as much as by the rider. It also means a lot of stop-start, which is the condition where a poorly chosen system is most obviously shouting rather than playing.
